St. Louis Metro Area payroll jobs were reported as declining at a -2.5% rate with 33,800 jobs lost between December 2008 and December 2009 for a total of 1,320,400 jobs. In a separate survey of households, the unemployment rate for the metro area increased from 7.6% in August 2008 to 9.8% in December 2009. These items are not seasonally adjusted.

St. Louis County had 580,700 wage and salary workers covered by unemployment insurance in June 2009, down 6% from June 2008. The data shows a continuation of the employment decline that began in March 2008 and probably represents the low point of the recession. - February 5, 2010 -

St. Louis County Per Capita Personal Income increased by 5.9% to $51,710 in 2007, highest in Missouri, and was 152 percent of the state average, $32,789, and 134 percent of the national average, $38,615. The 2006-2007 change was higher than the state change of 4.5 percent and the national change of 4.9 percent. The data was released by the U.S. Bureau of Economic Analysis.

Seven out of 24 "outperforming" school districts in Missouri are located in St. Louis County. These seven districts were the only St. Louis metro area school districts to be defined by Standard and Poor as consistently outperforming demographically similar school districts. The districts are Brentwood, Clayton, Kirkwood, Ladue, Parkway, Rockwood and Webster Groves.
