St. Louis County Police Implement Precious Metal Marking System

Posted 38 days ago ago by News Editor

For Immediate Release

On Monday, June 2, 2014, the St. Louis County Police Department Burglary Unit implemented a county-wide Precious Metal Marking System. This system utilizes a marker to make invisible identification marks on precious metals and appliances, which can only be seen under ultraviolet fluorescent lighting. The original start of the program in January of this year in small sections of the County saw great success and it was requested to be expanded.

With the introduction of these markers, cooperation with the scrap yards, and working with Pawn Shops to check any incoming appliances and electronics for these markings will greatly deter theft of these items and increase the chance property is returned to its rightful owners.

Anyone interested in obtaining a marker for their personal property may contact their local Precinct. Businesses and private real estate owners are encouraged to participate by utilizing one of the Precinct designated markers and marking their items with the home/business address. The markers are readily available to be loaned out on an as needed basis.
