The mission of the Health Education unit of Saint Louis County Department of Health is to promote healthy behaviors in collaboration with community partners. We provide health information programs, presentations and consultations that promote health and prevent disease.
Teen Pregnancy Prevention
The theme for May 2012 is “Teen Pregnancy Prevention”.
Your Saint Louis County Department of Health is taking part in raising awareness about this very important issue. Educating teens and adults on the importance of teen pregnancy prevention is very important in decreasing the number of births to teenage mothers. Although the number of unmarried births to teens has continued to drop over the last 10 years, the need to get the message out that waiting to become a parent until adulthood is the best and healthiest for all family members involved.
Despite the fact that the teen pregnancy birth rate steadily declined from 1991-2005 the U.S. still has the highest pregnancy rates than most developed countries. Regionally, in recent years Missouri has experienced increases in the teen birth rate. There are still more than 8,600 births to teens annually in the state of Missouri. There continues to be large disparities between the teen pregnancy rates from one zip code to the next. Read Full Article
